FIELDS, Samuel L., age 84, son of Ralph and Lily (Rose) Fields, passed away Friday, November 7, 2008 at his home. He was born in Berea, Kentucky where he spent his childhood. After high school in Monroe, Ohio, he joined the Navy at age 17, while his brother, Russell, joined the Army right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He spent several years helping his mother, Lily, run her restaurant, “Lily’s Place”, near Le Sourdsville Lake. In October 1944, he married Mollie Scalf. Sam worked as a car salesman before beginning his career in the Payroll Dept. of McGraw Construction Company of Middletown where he was employed until his retirement. Sam loved playing golf, listening to jazz, gardening in his yard and fishing. He went fishing the last week of his life with longtime friend, Ronnie Hall. He was an avid reader and read three newspapers a day. He could talk to anyone about anything and was loved by everyone he met. Sam is survived by his wife, Mollie Fields ; two sons, Greg and David (Melody) Fields of Hamilton ; daughter, Kim (Mark) Evans of Virginia and grandchildren, Morgan, Meredyth and Sam Evans and Kyle and Tory Ellen Fields. He is also survived by two sisters, Anne (Dick) Sipe and Hilda Callahan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Russell Field and sister, Martha Moore. Friends are invited to celebrate the life of Sam Fields from 6 – 8 PM, Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the VFW Chuck Cain Post 7670, 4021 Trenton Road, Overpeck. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the VFW Chuck Cain Post 7670 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Colligan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
